Instructor Support for Educational Systems

January 2023 -20/01/2023

Updated on

The new Brightspace release is available from 20 January 2023 10:00.

New Content Create/Edit Experience

This release will change the workflow for creating or editing Content in your Brightspace course offering, making it more consistent with the way Assignment and Quizzes are created/edited.

Most Content will now have the options to add availability dates to them which will be displayed in the Content topic. Adding a Start or End Date to a content topic will hide it before the Start Date and after the End Date.

The new workflow is applicable to Modules, HTML Topics, Weblinks, LTI Links, Uploaded Files, SCORM, LOR (Learning Object Repository), LTI (External Learning Tools) and Discussion topics.

Enhancements

Brightspace – Supported Browsers

This release updates the list of retro or legacy browsers (specific older versions of supported browsers). If you are using a browser below the latest updates, the "Your browser is looking a little retro" warning message appears.

The browsers include:

  • Chrome 107+ (released October 2022)
  • Android Chrome 107+ (released October 2022)
  • macOS Safari 16+ (released September 2022)
  • iOS Safari 16+ (released September 2022)
  • Firefox 106+ (released October 2022)

Brightspace Editor – Equations render consistently for all users

To improve consistency in the Brightspace Editor, this release updates the Editor so that it renders all equations during editing or creation in the same MathJax format as when published.  This helps with correct formatting and spacing of equations, which makes it easier to review work prior to publishing.

Lessons – Set content topics as optional or required in the New Content Experience

With this release, instructors can set a Content topic as Optional or Required

Please note that setting a Content topic to either optional or required will not be displayed when viewing the content. This functionality is currently not available for our Leiden University Brightspace environment.

Rubrics – Discard incomplete evaluations

If an instructor clicks Return to user submissions or Return to submissions, a verification dialog appears to ensure you want to discard the incomplete evaluation. From that dialog, the instructor can save the draft, discard the draft, or close the dialog box and return to the partial evaluation. If an instructor edits a previously published evaluation and then decides to cancel before updating, all the changes in the evaluation, including the rubric evaluation changes, are discarded.
