How do I control when and how students see their Feedback and Grade for Turnitin Assignments?

Updated on

This article will explain in depth how you can control when and where students are able to view their grade and inline feedback inserted in Feedback Studio.

When will a grade and/or inline feedback inserted in Feedback Studio be visible for students?

After you have assessed the students' submissions in Feedback Studio your Inline Feedback and Score are saved as Draft. You have to actively select the submissions and hit Publish Feedback to release the feedback to your students. Brightspace will never automatically release feedback for (Turnitin) Assignments.

ScreenSteps - Google Chrome

In the example above we can see:

  1. The feedback on this submission is not yet published; indicated by the Draft Saved.
  2. For this assignment the feedback is already Published, this student will be able to see their score + inline feedback. Also, this student will receive an e-mail notification.

Where this feedback is published depends on a couple of things:

  • Whether you have attached a Grade Item to your Turnitin Assignment.
  • Whether you have set your Assignment to visible / hidden.
  • Whether you have set the attached Grade Item to visible / hidden.

Please see below the impact per setting:

Turnitin Assignments that are linked to a Grade Item

As soon as you hit Publish Feedback the Grade and the Inline Feedback will both be published under Grades & Course Tools > Assignments. Depending if you have set your assignment and/or grade item to visible, students will see different things. Please see the impact per setting choice:

1. Assignment & Associated Grade Item are both set to Visible for Users.

This requires the Assignment and the associated Grade Item are set to Visible for Users.

Students will immediately see their grade, but they need to click on the feedback link (highlighted in the images below) to review your inline feedback.

2. Grade item is set to Hide for Users

If you have set the associated grade item to Hide from users, the student will only be able to see their grade + feedback under Course Tools > Assignments. If they click on Grades, they will not see their grade for this assignment.

3. Assignment is set to Hide for Users

If you have set the Assignment to Hide from users, the student will only be able to see their grade under Grades. The feedback is no longer visible, since the Assignment is hidden.

4. Assignment & Associated Grade Item are both set to Hide from Users.

Finally, if you have set both the assignment & grade item to hide from users, students will not see anything.

Summarized:

  • Set both the Assignment AND the associated Grade Item to Hide from Users, if you do not want students to see their grade and feedback.
  • Set the Assignment to Hide from Users, if you only want to show the Grade in the Gradebook and NOT the inline Feedback.

Turnitin Assignments without a Grade Item

The only place where students are able to see their score and/or inline Feedback is under Course Tools > Assignments. Since the assignment is not linked to an Grade Item, the grade will not appear under Grades for the students.

Students will only be able to see their grade and/or inline feedback if the Assignment is Visible for Users.

If you only inserted Inline Feedback in Feedback Studio, the students will never see a grade, since you did not assess with a grade. The same applies if you only provided a grade in Feedback Studio and no inline feedback. Students will only see a grade, since you did not assess with inline feedback.
