Searching in the LOR

The Copyright Repository is a part of the Learning Object Repository (LOR) within Brightspace. This repository is a collection of copyrighted documents, which can be inserted as course content. When you want to add copyrighted material (and there is no link available to the Leiden Catalogue or any open access database) you should always check whether the material is already added to LOR. This instruction will provide useful tips to search for material in the LOR.

This article contains the following subjects:

First of all, you should navigate to the LOR. This is possible in the following ways:

  1. To just search in the Copyright Repository:
    • At the homepage of Brightspace: click on My Brightspace > LOR.
    • In a course: click on Course Tools > LOR.
  2. To add a document from the LOR to the content of a course:
    • Go to the Content of your course.
    • Go to the (sub)module
    • Click on Add Existing.
    • Click on LOR.
  • Enter a search term.
  • Click on Search.

Use OR to search for instances of one word/phrase or another by adding OR (uppercase).

It is also possible to do an advanced search for materials in the Copyright Repository. This can be useful when there are a lot of articles with the same subject.


Go to the LOR. This can be done in the following ways:

  1.  To just search in the Copyright Repository:
    • At the homepage of Brightspace: click on My Brightspace > LOR.
    • In a course: click on Course Tools > LOR.
  2. To add a document from the LOR to the content of a course:
    • Go to the Content of your course.
    • Go to the (sub)module
    • Click on Add Existing.
    • Click on LOR.
  • Click on Advanced Search.
  • Enter a search term in the search bar.
  • Check where the search term can occur: the Title, the Description, the Keywords or the Full Text
  • Leave Copyright Materials checked.
  • Click on Expand Search Restrictions to add more restrictions to your search.
  • Check Type to select a particular type of resources.
  • Check Rights to select what the licensing costs and restrictions of the material should be.
  • Check Rating to select what the rating of the resources should be.
  • Check Status to select what the status is the material is.
  • Check Exclude metadata from sub-objects in search to not include the metadata in the search results.
  • Check Only resources I published to restrict the search to only materials you published in the LOR.
  • Select by timeframe to specify which timeframe you want since the resource is published in the LOR.
  • Select by date range to specify between which dates the resource was published.

Click on Expand Metadata Search Restrictions.

  • Select in the drop-down menu which category to want to include in the search results of the metadata.
  • Click on Add Metadata Field to add another category.
  • Click on Search.

Change the display of the search results

There is also a possibility to change the display of the search results.

  • Click on Settings.
  • Select in the drop-down menu the amount of resources you want displayed in the search results.
  • Select how you want the search results to be sorted (by Relevancy, Date of publishing or Title).
  • Check Show details of object expanded by default if you want the details of all search results to be shown. Note: It is also possible to show these details manually per resource in the search results.
  • Check under Field Display the information you want to be shown in the search results.
  • Click on Save.
