Share content using the Media Library

Updated on

This article provides a guide to the usage of the Media Library tool, which can be used in Brightspace as a centralized location to upload, organize and share files to support collaboration.  Please note that while the Brightspace Media Library can be used to host videos and audio, we highly suggest you use Kaltura instead.

Where do I find the Media Library?

Go to Admin tools > Organization related > Media Library

Overview of Media Library

Within Media Library, the following options are available:

  1. Add Assets allows you to upload files or record audio and video content directly.
  2. Create Folder can be used to organize files inside folders.
  3. Use the Filter button to display files based on:

    -  Who owns the file.

    -  The type of file.

    -  When it was last edited.

    -  When it was created.

Inserting items from your media library in your course content

You can insert items in your course content using the following workflow:

  1. In the course content view, click on the Add Existing options.
  2. Click on More and then select Media Library.
  3. Select the item you want to insert using the radio button and press Next.
  4. Change the title (or don't) and press Insert.

Manage Versions

The ellipsis menu (the 3 dots) allows you to perform several operations on the folder or file in question. While most options in this menu are self explanatory, we will discuss the Manage Versions option below.

Using the Manage Versions option will allow you to upload an updated version of a previously uploaded document to your Media Library. Once uploaded, you will be able to publish the new version of this document. By doing so, the document will be updated across your courses and content.
