2. Add Videos

This article explains how to add videos to the video portal. You can add videos in three ways:

  1. Upload a video file
  2. Add a YouTube clip
  3. Upload a webcam recording

Any media you add will only be available in your own area of the video portal. This section of the video portal can be found under 'My Media' in the user menu.

Upload Video File

  • Click Add New at the top right of the site header to see the menu options.
  • Click Media Upload to upload a video file from your device. 

In the next screen you will be asked to accept the terms of use.

Accepting the terms and conditions is necessary to be able to upload videos to the video portal.

  • Check the box I agree to the above terms and conditions.
  • After placing the checkmark, an extra web page item will appear Upload Media.
  • Click Choose a file to upload.

After choosing a video file to upload, a progress bar will appear.

Below the progress bar, you will find the various information fields (metadata) that are linked to your video file.

  • The available fields are:
    1. Name (obligated)
    2. Description (obligated)
    3. Tags (optional)
    4. Faculty (optional)
    5. Language (optional)
    6. Creative Commons (optional)
    7. Other Copyright License (optional)

If the upload is successful, a green information bar will appear on the screen with the following message: Upload Completed! Complete the required information for the uploaded media below.

  • Scroll down the webpage and click Save.

Saving files can sometimes take a while. A bar will appear at the top of the page showing the progress.

 If the save was successful, a green information bar will appear with the message: ‘Your changes have been saved’. Additionally, the page shows whether there is still missing information (orange area) as well as how the video was published.

Scroll to the bottom of the page and click the Go To Media link in the middle to go directly to the video you just uploaded.

Add a YouTube clip

  • Click Add New at the top right of the site header to see the menu options.
  • Click YouTube to add a public YouTube video.

In the next screen you will be asked to accept the terms of use.

  • Check the box I agree to the above terms and conditions.

After placing the checkmark, an additional web page component will appear ‘Youtube’.

  • Paste the link to the YouTube video you want to add in the field below the text Video Page Link (or Content ID).
  • Click Preview to continue.

You will now see a preview of the video with information fields below that you can fill in. The information you add to the video here is only visible on the video portal of Leiden University.

  • Fill in all required information fields.
  • Scroll to the bottom of the webpage and click Save to add the video to your media collection.

Once the save is complete, the Go To Media link will appear next to the Save button

  • Click Go To Media to go directly to the video you just added.

Webcam recording

To make a webcam recording, open the Add New menu and select Webcam Recording.

When you first start a webcam recording you will need to grant access to your microphone and camera.


  • Click Allow.

When you have granted access to the camera and microphone, you can decide which device you want to use.


  • Click on the gear logo.
  • Choose whether you want to adjust the camera or the audio.

When all input devices are selected and/or turned on/off you can start recording.

  • Click on the big red button in the middle below the screen to start recording.
  • The timer counts down from three to zero.
  • When you're done recording, click the button as shown below.

Once the recording has stopped, a preview will appear allowing you to play back the recorded video.

Below the preview you will find three options:

The three options below the preview include:

  • Record Again: Record a new video. The previous recording will be deleted.
  • Save a copy: Save a copy locally on your computer.
  • Use This: Save the video within the video platform and a form opens in which the following fields are required: title, description and tag.
  • Click on 'Save' at the bottom of the form to save the video in 'My Media'.
