How do I log in and join a Zoom meeting?

Updated on

In this article, you will learn the best way to log in to Zoom. Additionally, we explain why it is recommended to use the desktop application.

Click one of the links below to go directly to a specific section:

Preferably use the URL specifically set up for Leiden University: https://universiteitleiden.zoom.us/. This is especially important when using the Leiden University Zoom environment for the first time.

Through this URL, you will have access to:

  • A download link for the Zoom desktop application
  • Guides for using Zoom
  • Links to useful support channels
  • Quick access buttons to start, join, or schedule a meeting
  • A Single Sign-On (SSO) login button

If you are logging in to the university's Zoom environment for the first time, Zoom will send an activation email to the email address linked to the account you are using to log in. Click on the activation link in the email to activate your Zoom account and proceed with logging in.

Preference for the Zoom Desktop Application (Zoom Workplace)

For using Zoom within Leiden University, we recommend installing the Zoom desktop application (Zoom Workplace). This application offers the most comprehensive functionalities and is recommended by Zoom itself over the web application in the browser.

The web application is an alternative for situations where installing the desktop application is not possible, for example, if you do not have installation rights on the computer. However, please note that the web application has limitations and does not always provide the same quality or stability as the desktop version.

Therefore, only use the web application if there is no other option.

We aim to ensure that all staff and students can use the application, regardless of whether they are working on a managed or unmanaged PC. For users with an unmanaged PC, it is their own responsibility to install the desktop application.

Do you need help with the installation? Users with a managed PC can contact the ISSC Helpdesk for assistance.

1. Log in and join a meeting via the ‘Join’ button in the desktop application. You can find this button on the main screen.

2. Enter the meeting ID. If you are logged in to the desktop application, your name will automatically be filled in as it is registered in the Leiden University system.

3. If the host has enabled ULCN login, you do not need to fill in anything further and can join the meeting directly. If the host has only enabled passcode access, enter the passcode provided by the host.

The ‘Join’ button is also available in the Zoom web application (the "Join from web browser" option). The behaviour of this button depends on whether you are logged in via the browser. Additionally, the login experience may vary depending on the version and security settings of your browser.

To ensure the best experience, we recommend using the Zoom desktop application (Zoom Workplace) whenever possible and using the ‘Join’ button there.
