In this article, we explain how spell checking works in Ans and Schoolyear and which limitations apply. We recommend using spell checking only when you are not using Schoolyear. Spell checking has several limitations, which are explained below.

How does spell checking work in Ans?
Ans offers the option to enable spell checking at test level. When this option is enabled, Ans uses the built-in spell checker of the student's browser.
In open questions and fill-in questions, potentially misspelled words are underlined while the student is typing. Students can select a suggested correction from a drop-down menu.
Please note: The language of the spell checker cannot be set in advance. As a result, spell-checking options are very limited when tests are administered on Chromebooks.
Limitations when using Schoolyear and Chromebooks
Are you using Schoolyear and/or administering the test on a Chromebook? The following limitations apply:
Spell check language
The language of the spell checker is determined by the language used by the browser.
On university-managed devices, the browser is set to Dutch. As a result, only Dutch spell checking is available.
On unmanaged devices (BYOD), the spell checker language is determined by the student's operating system. This may vary between students and cannot be changed during the test.
Spelling suggestions in Schoolyear
When using Schoolyear security, students do not receive spelling suggestions. Schoolyear blocks the pop-up containing spelling suggestions within the secure environment.
The spell checker can still mark words as potentially misspelled, but students cannot select a suggested correction in Schoolyear.
Test taking without Schoolyear
For an unsecured Ans test that is not administered on a Chromebook, the spell checker language is determined by the student's browser settings.
Students can add or change languages themselves, for example through the language settings in Chrome. This allows them to adjust the language available for spell checking themselves.

Configure digital test settings
Always enable spell check through Ans. The Schoolyear integration will then automatically apply this setting in Schoolyear.
