In this article, we explain how to add an extra layer of security to your Ans account using two-factor authentication (2FA). Click on the links below to go directly to a specific section:
What is two-step authentication?
Like many other accounts, your Ans account is secured so that only you can access it. Logging in via ULCN using your password provides the first layer of security. However, a malicious individual who knows your password could gain access to your account.
Two-factor authentication (2FA) is a security method that adds a second layer of identity verification. Rather than relying solely on a password, 2FA requires you to confirm your identity using two different factors. This reduces the risk of unauthorised access, even if a password has been leaked.
We strongly recommend 2FA for all staff at Leiden University, particularly if you are a department administrator within your faculty.
Due to the ban on smartphones, students are unable to use 2FA during exams.
For the time being, Ans only offers the option to set up 2FA using something you have, namely your smartphone. The steps below show you how to set it up.
- Click on your profile icon in the top right-hand corner.
- Click on Settings.
- Next, go to the Security-tab.
- Under the heading Two-factor authentication, click Enable.
- Now use an authenticator app by your choice on your mobile phone to scan the uniquely generated QR code
The NetIQ Advanced Authentication app, which you may be using for ULCN multi-factor authentication, can be used for this purpose.
- In the Verification code-field, enter the code you receive from your authenticator app.
- Click on Continue.
Two-step verification has now been successfully set up.
- Log in to Ans as usual. You will now be taken to the ‘two-factor authentication’ screen.
- Open your authenticator app on your smartphone. Depending on the app you’re using, you may need to select Ans specifically.
- Enter the 6-digit code you have been given.
- Select (optional) ‘Trust this browser for 7 days’.
- Click ‘Verify’ to log in.
If you no longer have access to your authentication code, you will not be able to log in. Please contact a operational manager of your faculty so that they can reset your authentication code. After the reset, follow the steps outlined above once again to set up 2FA again.
Have you lost the device you used to log in to Ans (such as your laptop, tablet or mobile phone), or has it been stolen? In that case, there has been a data breach. Please contact the ISSC Helpdesk straight away so that they can protect the data on your device from malicious actors.
Please also contact a functional administrator at your faculty so that they can reset your authentication code. This will remove any trusted browsers on your lost device, ensuring that your account remains secure.
