In this article, we discuss the difference between item bank tests and subject-specific tests. We also explain how you can use these two types of tests to create assessments more efficiently. Click the link below to go directly to a specific section:
What is the difference between an item bank and a subject test?
There are two ways to create a test in ANS.
- When a test is created directly within a course, we refer to it as a course test.
- When a test is created using an item bank, we refer to it as an item-bank test.
Why do we use an item bank?
An item bank is a digital repository for questions and assignments. This allows you to easily reuse assignments and questions for different tests. One of the advantages of an item bank is that assignments are stored in a structured manner. The structure of an item bank is based on linking domains and learning objectives to exercises. By working with an item bank, you can create new tests more quickly. Want to learn more about domains and learning objectives? See this manual for more information.
How do I use an item bank for a subject test?
An item bank test can be identical to the course test, but you can also use the item bank for pre-selection. In the latter case, you use a selection of questions from the item bank for the course test. This allows you to ensure that a random question is automatically selected for each learning objective on each test. As a result, students are not all presented with the same question.
How do I convert an item bank test into a subject test?
Once you’ve created a test using the item bank, you can easily copy it to the course. There, you can customize it as needed by limiting the number of questions or adjusting the test flow. Note: When copying tests, it’s always important to synchronize the end-user test before administering it.
