How do I create and manage question bank exercises?

Updated on

In this article, we explain how to create a question bank assignment and what changes you can make. Among other things, we cover how to copy a question bank assignment, assign metadata, and perform bulk import and export operations.

1. Creating and editing question bank exercises

Follow these steps to create an exercise in your question bank:

  1. Go to the Ans environment where the question bank is located and log in.
  2. Click on exercises in the menu at the top.
  3. Select new exercise.
  4. Enter the name of your exercise.
  5. Then click on save.

You will now see the editing environment for the assignment.

Please note: when question bank assignments linked to test insights are edited, they are considered new versions of the original assignments. This means that the data collection process starts again.

1.1. How to duplicate an question bank

In ANS, you can duplicate an assignment and use it within a questionbank. Want to know more about how to duplicate question bank assignments? See this Ans manual for a step-by-step plan.

1.2. Question bank exercise log

A question bank exercise log provides insight into the changes that have been made to an exercise. Want to know more about which changes are tracked? See this Ans manual for an overview.

1.3. Collaborate

It is also possible to have other colleagues with the role of author make the changes. You can do this by registering colleagues in the question bank. Want to know more about what is possible? See the Ans manual for a step-by-step plan for each change.

2. Question bank metadata settings

You can enrich a question bank exercise with various metadata such as labels, tags, relationships with other exercises and media from your question bank. By using metadata, you can better organise, search and manage exercises. First, we will provide a brief step-by-step plan on how to access the metadata. This is followed by a brief overview of all options.

  1. Click on the question bank containing the assignment. Use the search bar to find the assignment more quickly.
  2. You will see an overview of all assignments in the question bank.
  3. Click on the assignment you want to edit. You will see the following screen:

2.1. Options

In the sections below, we briefly explain each type of metadata and how to assign it to an assignment. Click on the headings to see the description.

Labels

Labels indicate the progress of an assignment, allowing you to see how far along a question is in its development. The options are: accepted, draft, review needed, and revision needed. It is also possible to create your own labels. Want to know more? See this Ans manual on how to create your own labels.

Tags

A tag is used for identification purposes. By assigning a tag to a question, you can more easily select random questions. It is also useful to use tags when you automatically create a test using a test blueprint. Want to know more? See this Ans manual to learn more about using blueprints.

By clicking on the + icon, you will see the following screen:

Enter the key and then the value. To save the tag, click on create. When successful, you will see the tag in the block.

Relaties

Media

When an image or file is used in an assignment, it is automatically uploaded to the media library of the question bank. This makes it easy to reuse images or files in other assignments.

Would you like to know more about what metadata you can add to assignments? See this Ans manual for more information about the options available.

2.2. Import metadata (beta)

You can import tags and learning objectives from external sources. Would you like to know more? See this Ans manual for more information.

Would you like to know more about what metadata you can add to assignments? See this Ans manual for more information about the options available.

3. Importing and exporting of question bank exercises

It is possible to import or export assignments. Below, we briefly describe how you can perform this action. Please note: importing and exporting to other assessment platforms does not always run smoothly. Always consult with your faculty's functional administrator in the case of bulk operations.

Import

You can import assignments in bulk from other question banks or test platforms, such as Remindo. ANS supports the following import formats:

  • Question & Test Interoperability (QTI)
  • Question Markup Language (QML)
  • Respondus import
  • Zipfile

Want to know more about what metadata you can add to assignments? See this Ans manual for more information about the options available.

Export

You can export assignments in bulk to other question banks within Ans or other external assessment platforms. Ans supports the following export formats:

  • QTI 2.1
  • Respondus export

You can track the status of the export process via Background processes
