Leiden Schemes, available formats

A Grade Scheme needs to be picked in Brightspace for a student's final grade to be calculated. The Brightspace support team of Leiden University provides standard grade schemes for you to use in your Gradebook. These are Organization Schemes, and are found in the Setup Wizard of the Gradebook. The Organization Schemes are regulated guidelines for grading at Leiden University.

For every separate Grade Item, you must also pick a Grade Scheme

What are Grade Schemes?

Grade Schemes are organizational arrangements that make grading understandable for the instructor and students on Brightspace. Since Brightspace calculates using percentages, a numeric value needs to be allocated to these percentages. This can be done through setting a Grade Scheme

Leiden University almost never uses grading in percentages. Brightspace has by default a Percentage scheme and it automatically gives a pass to students scoring a minimum of 50%. This does not match Leiden University's grading system, and this is why we recommend to use one of our pre-made Grade Schemes

What are the available Leiden Grade Schemes?

For partial grades:

We highly recommend you to use the Leiden Scheme_Partial Grade_Rounded off at 0.1_Pass 5.5

These grades have value between 1 and 10, and are rounded off at 0.1, (also between 5.0 and 6.0). A student passes the test if the grade is 5.5 or higher.

For final grades:

You need to decide how you want your final grade to be rounded off. Choose one of the Leiden Scheme_ Final Grade schemes: we offer three types, where all grades are between 1-10. The difference between the three final grade schemes is the rounding off: you can decide between 0.1, 0.5 or 1.0. Choose which one is agreed within your faculty.

The main difference between partial grades and final grades is the 5-6 rule. Final grades between 5.0 and 5.4 are rounded off to a 5, and grades between 5.5 and 5.9 are rounded off to a 6.

Display of grades

The Grade Schemes are set up so that failed grades (up to 5.4) are displayed in a red colour and passed grades (from 5.5) are displayed in a green colour. This is set up for the convenience of the instructor to easily check how an assignment is filled out by students.

Can I create my own Grade Scheme?

It is also possible to make your own Grade Scheme: personalized Grade Schemes are referred to as Course Schemes. This Scheme is only visible to your own course. Choose for every Grade Item the most suitable Scheme.

Does one of the recommended Leiden Schemes not fit your course's objectives and do you need assistance in creating a new Grade Scheme? Please contact the Brightspace support team at Brightspacesupport@sea.leidenuniv.nl.
